While the first of two Dukes of Dixieland sampler LPs (taken from their dozen Audio Fidelity albums) mostly stuck to very well-known Dixieland tunes, the follow-up has a variety of pre-1920 songs, some of which are rarely performed in this setting. Among the tunes fitting into that category are "Thunder & Blazes, "Lassus Trombone," "Dill Pickles" and "Slide, Frog, Slide"; the band's rendition of "Asleep in the Deep" is delightful. Although the personnel is unfortunately not given, trumpeter Frank Assunto and trombonist Fred Assunto actually shared the frontline during this period with three different clarinetists: Harold Coper, Jack Maheu and Jerry Fuller (who is only heard here on "Maple Leaf Rag"). Fun music.
