AllMusic Review by

The Legends Collection is a concise, 20-track budget-line anthology that neatly summarizes Aretha Franklin's late-'60s/early-'70s tenure as the queen of Atlantic Records, and by extension, soul. From her breakthrough single "I Never Loved a Man" all the way through to her gospelized reading of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," all of Franklin's key singles are here. Slightly lesser-known gems like the scorchingly funky "The House That Jack Built" and the hip-shaking riff on the Band's "The Weight" sound every bit as fresh as stone classics like "I Say a Little Prayer."
