If everything here were as pure a hillbilly distillation as the title track or the loopy "Old King Kong," Brown might come off like a simple hick with limited nostalgia appeal. But his range is surprisingly wide. Brown's ballads -- "I'll Climb Any Mountain" and "Wildest Dreams" -- though simple, build to stunning, emotional climaxes. "Every Now and Then" is the equal of many of The Everly Brothers' best. And "Nobody Knows" is surely one of the most lonesome wails in a long, long time.
