Hana is a set of gentle, sometimes rhythmic ambience from Jeff Greinke and Anisa Romero, lead vocalist from Sky Cries Mary. On six of the eight compositions, Romero's vocals are wordless chants. Her heartfelt style allows her voice to be an integral part of Greinke's sound design. Track five, "Liquid Opera," features only Greinke's manipulation of her chanted vocals. It is a highlight of the set. Greinke's minimalism, usually dark and somber, sees a new light through Romero's sophisticated soprano. Her style does little to change the solemnity of the music, but does much to alter the perspective. The ambience is not dark; the atmospheres are full of angst but not pain. This CD is unlike any other. Fans of Dead Can Dance, Jim Cole, Lee Ellen Shoemaker (the Tunnel Singer), and Loreena McKennitt might like this CD. From a historical perspective, that uniqueness makes this a solid addition to any collection.
