On this fine set, 73-year-old singer Maxine Sullivan performs 16 songs composed by Harold Arlen and lyricist Ted Koehler between 1931-34 for the Cotton Club shows. With backing by pianist Keith Ingham's groups (which include Phil Bodner on reeds, a few guest appearances by tenor Al Klink and the great acoustic guitarist Marty Grosz), Sullivan brings out the beauty of the tunes. Many hits resulted from the Arlen-Koehler partnership, and the highlights of the program include "Happy as the Day Is Long," "As Long as I Live," "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," "Stormy Weather" and "I've Got the World on a String," along with a few obscurities.
