74 at the time, Maxine Sullivan is heard on this CD reissue of a Tono LP performing 12 songs (including a previously unissued "Cheatin' on Me"), 11 of which she had never recorded before (all but "It's Wonderful"). Some of the songs are standards, such as "This Is New," "You Hit the Spot," and "That's All"; there are also a few more recent songs (including Billy Joel's "He's Got a Way (She's Got a Way)"). Sullivan's simple and straightforward style was unchanged from the '30s, and her voice still sounds pretty strong throughout this outing. She is assisted by pianist Dick Hyman, Seldon Powell (on tenor and flute), bassist Major Holley, and drummer Mel Lewis. Although this particular project is not quite essential, it can be accurately stated that Maxine Sullivan never recorded an unworthy set.
