This budget LP gives no personnel or date information so one gets what they pay for. Actually the half-hour of music is generally quite rewarding. Dizzy Gillespie is teamed with expatriate tenor Don Byas on "Blue and Sentimental" and fronts a rhythm section for strong versions of "Sleepy Time Down South" and "Blue Moon." The other seven tracks find Gillespie performing with "his Operatic Strings" but the results are much more exhilarating than one might fear. He does not let the arrangements inhibit him and he plays brilliantly throughout. This music deserves better treatment than was given it by Everest (it should be reissued complete and in chronological order with all of the discographical data) but, if found at a cheap price, get this.
