Dizzy Gillespie in Paris, Vol. 1 Review

by Scott Yanow

This CD fully (except for a saxophone feature) documents a Paris concert by Dizzy Gillespie and his quintet, with baritonist Bill Graham (the liners mistakenly list him as playing alto and tenor), pianist Wade Legge, bassist Lou Hackney, and drummer Al Jones. Actually, singer Joe Carroll (whose overly enthusiastic vocals are an acquired taste) co-stars with Gillespie on many of the selections. There is plenty of joking around, but the trumpeter is in consistently inventive form before a very appreciative crowd during a well-rounded show. Highlights include "The Champ," "Good Bait," Sarah Vaughan's guest vocal on "Embraceable You," and "Ooh-Shoo-Bee-Doo-Be."
