In a time when acoustic sounds are regularly processed through electronics, when alternative music has appropriated the environments and experiments of the avant-garde, and when stylistic lines are blurred past all recognition -- in short, the turn of the twenty first century -- it is possible to listen to "Blue" Gene Tyranny's innovative, forward-looking Country Boy Country Dog (1967-1984) without ever guessing its different time frames, its raw sources, or the technical advances it represents. One need not even know that its extraordinary sounds and procedures were derived from Tyranny's 1966 score, How to Discover Music in the Sounds of Your Daily Life, to appreciate that its snippets of commonplace noises and their varied mutations are as fresh and familiar as they were when first recorded and fashioned. Similarly, one need not ponder the long period of CBCD's production to find Tyranny's portrait of one day credible and recognizable. This 1994 CD of CBCD works as a balanced construction, expressive of the explorations of the 1960s and yet shaded by memories of a past that seems especially ingenuous and poignant today. This claim can be made of few electro-acoustic works of the same period, and CBCD stands as one of "Blue" Gene Tyranny's most enduring, as well as endearing, efforts.
