AllMusic Review by

This CD was made from two evenings of live performances at the University of Michigan and includes two spontaneous keyboard duets by Tyranny (on acoustic piano) and the DME's director composer Steven Rush (on synthesizer), and arrangements by the DME musicians of selections of music from Tyranny's "audio-storyboard" called "The Driver's Son" (full version for narrator and chorus, with electro-acoustic orchestra): "The De-certified Highway of Dreams" (I, II, and III) and the "Isle of the Rose Apple Trees" (I and II). The DME offers many wonderful combinations of their digitally-processed acoustic instruments -- electric bassoon, electric and sampled drums, electric trumpet, electric flute, electric guitar, electric euphonium, and voice -- as well as several synthesizers (three players). In recent reviews, this disc has been described as "...bopping along with high energy and poppy tunes...it's infectiously joyous..." by Kyle Gann (The Village Voice); an "...appealing collaboration..." by Andy Hamilton (The Wire magazine,England); and "New and Noteworthy: Joining forces with Steven Rush and the digital music ensemble of the University of Michigan, composer and pianist 'Blue' Gene Tyranny delivers another contemplative high-energy performance" at the Chamber Music America internet website.
