1967 found the Woody Herman Orchestra in transition. While tenor-saxophonist Sal Nistico and trombonist Carl Fontana were the biggest names, trumpeter Luis Gasca and pianist Albert Daily were up and coming players. This LP, recorded live at the tenth-annual Monterey Jazz Festival, features the sidelong "Concert for Herd," an adventurous work by Bill Holman. In addition there are three shorter pieces that find Herman and his musicians exploring a variety of music including a boogaloo and a feature for Herman's soprano sax ("The Horn of the Fish"). This fine all-around set has been long out-of-print.
