This is one of the more obscure Charlie Byrd LPs, a live set recorded for Tony Bennett's short-lived Improv label. The distinctive acoustic guitarist performs a wide variety of tunes with his trio (which also includes bassist Joe Byrd and drummer Wayne Phillips) including such unlikely material as "Hey Jude," "Feelings" and "I Write the Songs." Much better are Byrd's interpretations of Scott Joplin's "Solace," "Limehouse Blues" and his own "Swing 59." No matter what the source, the music is tasteful, concise and lightly swinging.
