AllMusic Review by

LaserLight's Bluegrass Music from the Appalachian Mountains is a little frustrating. On the surface, it's a valuable collection, since it contains 30 classic traditional tunes, including "Cripple Creek," "One Dime Blues," "Sourwood Mountain," "Amazing Grace," "John Brown's Dream," "Sally Goodin," "Railroad Bill," "Pretty Polly," "John Henry," "Shady Grove," "Skip to My Lou," "Bowling Green," "Little Birdie," "The Banks of the Ohio," "The Wagoner's Lad" and "What Will We Do with the Baby-O." Certainly, that's a nice primer of Appalachian folk and bluegrass, but these performances aren't necessarily the most representative or best. Nevertheless, the quality of the music almost becomes a moot point when you consider that this disc retails at under six dollars -- which means that even if it isn't an ideal introduction, it is an affordable one and curious listeners on a tight budget will not be entirely dissatisfied with this sampler (which certainly whets the appetite for real bluegrass).
