With the exception of "I Cover the Waterfront," which is from 1975, the music on this set (all but "Rock Right" is played a quartet) was recorded in Copenhagen during 1956-1958. Astrup, a cool-toned tenor influenced by Stan Getz and Zoot Sims, mostly performs concise versions of standards, swinging lightly but with inner passion. Astrup is actually best-known in jazz for the discographies he has written on other bop and cool jazz musicians who he admires, but this LP shows that he was a fine musician himself. Among the songs that he swings are "Mean to Me," "How About You," and "Pennies From Heaven." Well worth picking up.
