Given the strength of Burt Bacharach's catalog, it would seem that assembling a compilation of his best material would be easy. Apparently it's not, if compilations like A Man & His Music are any indication. Part of the problem with A Man & His Music isn't that it contains bad songs -- it has a couple of weak moments, but all the beloved tunes are here -- it's that it contains selections from his solo A&M recordings. Bacharach may have been a great songwriter, but he wasn't much a performer and he simply doesn't do these songs as well as Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick, Sandie Shaw, Gene Pitney and the Walker Brothers did. And since there are compilations featuring those timeless performances, this disc won't be necessary for most consumers, and casual fans looking for a good collection of hits would be advised to pass this by in favor of The Look of Love.
