Closely allied to new age, the Environmental genre includes to nature recordings and works intended for spiritual meditation. Developing out of the naturalistic edge of new age during the early '70s, environmental music made great strides during the late '70s and early '80s, led by pioneers like Bernie Krause and his Wild Sanctuary organization. By the '90s, there were thousands of recordings, available mostly at new-age bookstores.
