The Beau Brummels

You Tell Me Why

Composed by Ron Elliott

Song Review by

Opening up the Beau Brummels' self-titled 1975 reunion album, "You Tell Me Why" is the lone remake of their older material to appear on the record. The song -- one of the Brummels' finest early ballads -- had indeed aged well. A strong, Beatles/Rubber Soul-inspired melody and feel surround the song, and although the "modern" arrangement here has dated somewhat, it couldn't disguise the brilliantly melancholy of the song itself. The relaxed vocal from Sal Valentino is one of the great features here, and it's worth seeking out -- after you've heard the original, of course.
