Rufus Wainwright

Sally Ann

Song Review by

The final slow selection on Rufus Wainwright, "Sally Ann" is also the home of one of the finest contemporary vocal duets; Wainwright's vocal intertwines with his sister, Martha Wainwright, to form a sibling blend that hasn't been heard, really, since the Everly Brothers. A downcast, almost 1920s love ballad, this song sounds as though it could have been sung in a French cabaret. The melody is extremely deliberate and illustrates the lyrical content perfectly, being a song of lost love and emotional regret.
