Put a Straw Under Baby

Composed by Brian Eno

Song Review by

A nursery rhyme by any other title, "Put a Straw Under Baby" from Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy album is a gentle, lilting lullaby, washing along on the sweetest tinkling waves -- and then the Portsmouth Sinfonia walk into the room, sawing and hacking with their customary inexpert expertise and that's it for bedtime stories. The next verse tells of an orchard where people get turned into crows, and the third leaves odd body parts lying around the house, reveling in their heavenly redemption: "there's a brain on the table/there's a heart in the chair/and they all live in Jesus/it's a family affair." Devilishly odd from start to finish.
