Oh Susanna (The Banjo Song)

Song Review by

An odd, early example of what was soon to become known as folk-rock, this re-reading of the Stephen Foster classic was recorded in a one-off session with future members of the Mamas & the Papas, the Lovin' Spoonful, as well as the Mugwumps and the Modern Folk Quartet. Essentially an experiment, it provided a slightly blusey template for the musical form that would soon take over the world. Some rock-solid guitar playing from Zal Yanovsky takes center stage here, and the overall effect, while a bit sloppy in execution, is one of the most important recordings included on the excellent Varese Sarabande The Magic Circle CD.
