Rufus Wainwright

Matinee Idol

Song Review by

A strong and unusual arrangement on "Matinee Idol" makes this one of the most powerfully strange recordings on Rufus Wainwright's debut album. A brief musical play (or tone poem), the song relates the rise and fall of an entertainment figure. Although set in a 1920s, cabaret musical feel, the song could easily be about a modern-day entertainment figure. Filled with both pathos and comedy, Wainwright's description of the protagonist is spot-on, and wholly engaging.
