Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band

Lick My Decals Off, Baby

Song Review by

The compellingly titled "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" opens the follow-up to the sprawling and opaque Trout Mask Replica like a more focused and direct version of that album's conceptual sprawl. This time out, the Magic Band is tighter and more rehearsed, with the addition of Art Tripp's marimba and percussion bringing new textures to the music. There are passages in this song, especially in the figure that opens the song and reappears in between the verses, that are actually recognizable as a catchy pop tune! The lyrics are even more direct, being one of the few instances where it's impossible to miss what the good Captain in singing about. The opening couplet "Rather than I wanna hold your hand, I wanna swallow you whole/And lick you everywhere it's pink 'n' everywhere you think" pretty much sums it up.
