The Shadows

Let Me Be the One

Composed by Paul Curtis

Song Review by

With the band having broken up piecemeal during the late '60s, the Shadows' 1974 reunion at a BBC benefit concert was one of the most important events of the year -- and one which the BBC themselves were not going to let pass unremarked. Before the end of the evening, the Shadows had been invited to represent the U.K. at the following year's Eurovision Song Contest. Paul Curtis' "Let Me Be the One" was selected from six songs aired on British TV in the weeks prior to the contest; a smooth but incredibly poppy ballad, it boasted few of the group's traditional trademarks -- nor did it have much in common with Eurovision's own standard fare. Rather, a decidedly mature offering stood little chance in the face of Holland's entry, the rampant jingle of Teach In's "Ding a Dong"; nevertheless, "Let Me Be the One" finished runner-up in the contest and also reached number 12 on the U.K. chart.
