Randy Newman

I Think It's Going to Rain Today

Song Review by

One of Randy Newman's most beloved compositions, "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today" succeeds despite its seemingly unrelated series of musical connections. Three different sections, all seemingly from different songs, are tied together in an impressionistic mini-suite that accurately describes the emotions of alienation and loneliness. Highly influenced by show tunes as well as having a classical feel, the song is easily one of Newman's first masterpieces. It also brought him some early, minor acclaim when it was covered exquisitely by Judy Collins on her In My Life album.
