Randy Newman

Davy the Fat Boy

Song Review by

An impossibly funny song about the possibility of being saddled with, of all things, a fat boy. Does it make any sense? Is there a clever analogy? No and no. It's pretty much exactly what it says. Musically, though, it's extremely ambitious and is another one of Newman's mini-suites. Also, like a lot of Newman's early work of this period, it is influenced by light classical and pop show tunes. The fact that the arrangement (one of Newman's own personal favorites) and general musical construction is so advanced makes the simplicity of the subject matter even more humorous.
