Gary Burton / Chick Corea

Crystal Silence

Song Review by

Chick Corea has composed numerous works during his long career, though it would be hard to name anything which eclipses the enduring “Crystal Silence.” The fusion rendition on his Return to Forever album is likely the first many Corea fans discovered. But far more interesting are the two duets with vibraphonist Gary Burton, one heard on the studio session Crystal Silence, the other on the exciting Chick Corea and Gary Burton in Concert (Zurich, October 28, 1979). In any case, this dreamy instrumental provokes introspective solos by the two virtuosos. While recording interest has been sporadic by others, major artists who have recorded “Crystal Silence” include Lee Konitz, Charlie Byrd, Marian McPartland, and even Woody Herman, who was always open minded about exploring pieces by younger composers of many styles.
