Squeeze

Cool for Cats

Composed by Chris Difford / Glenn Tilbrook

Song Review by

The only Squeeze single sung by lyricist Chris Difford, whose charming froggy croak of a voice sounds like an even less melodic Ian Dury, 1979's "Cool for Cats" is a rambling series of shaggy dog stories that Difford delivers in a conversational style, like he's relating the stories down at the local pub. Even more so than most early Squeeze songs, American listeners will need a copy of one of Eric Partridge's dictionaries of British slang to understand more than half of the lyrics, and even then it's still not entirely clear what exactly the title phrase means. Musically, the song's a curious mix of shambling pub rock and new wave weirdness, with Jools Holland's characteristic jazzy piano runs competing with a piston-like synthesizer line that burbles through the entire song barring a weird dub-like interlude of echoing drumbeats and Eno-esque drones and whooshes. That this strange, chorus-less song was actually a sizable U.K. chart hit only proves that the late '70s were an odd time, musically.
