Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown

Composed by Danny Whitten / Neil Young

Song Review by

In an album (Tonight's the Night) that is a virtual requiem for friends that were victims of drug abuse (Bruce Berry and Danny Whitten), Neil Young wisely chose a Whitten song to include in the album. "Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown" was a Crazy Horse staple, and this live recording stems from a Fillmore East show, recorded in 1971. It's a fabulous country barnburner, which encapsulates Crazy Horse's loud-and-proud appeal. Lyrically, it's also an appropriate inclusion for the album, as it looks at the drug culture -- albeit with a lighter touch than some of Young's songs on the album.
