The Monkees

Auntie's Municipal Court

Song Review by

Co-written by future Paul Revere & the Raiders member Keith Allison, this song was born out of a studio jam, followed by Michael Nesmith grafting one of his poems. Musically, there is an infectious, Tex-Mex twang that was a usual trademark of Nesmith's work, this time based in a simple 1-4-5 blues pattern. The lyrics seem to be a bit free-association, yet underneath Mickey Dolenz's fine vocal, there seems to be a narrative in the lyrics of a possible drug deal. Who knows? Whatever the inspiration, it's one of the best tracks on The Birds, the Bees & the Monkees.
