"Anyway" was written and recorded for the 1974 concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Trapped in a collapsed cave, Rael calmly awaits death. He had envisioned his end differently, but "How wonderful to be so profound/When everything you are is dying underground." A medium-tempo song driven by Tony Banks' piano and Peter Gabriel's interpretation of the hero's resignation, "Anyway" is packed with emotion. Its middle section, with cascading piano arpeggios and thundering bass notes, sounds like a rehearsal for the 1976 song "Ripples..." The very lyrical melody is cleverly contrasted with the atonality of "The Waiting Room" and the tongue-in-cheek irony of "The Supernatural Anaesthetist." It was only performed live during the Lamb tour (1974-1975).
