Carol Klein's Album Reviews
This album is probably my FAVORITE Horace Silver album, but it's often overlooked. The opening tune "No Smokin'" is quintessential Horace with precise horn lines and a hard-driving rhythm section. And the third track, "Soulville," is proof positive that the sound we associate with The Jazz Messengers was shaped in large part by Mr. Silver.

Some may dismiss this as just an all-star blowing session; it's not. Gotham City is worth it just for Dexter's exquisite reading of "A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square."
