Johann Sebastian Bach

Cantata No. 84, "Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke," BWV 84 (BC A43)

    Description by James Leonard

Composed for the Septuagesima Sunday, which fell on February 9, 1727, Bach's Cantata No. 84 "Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke" (I am content with my fate) (BWV 87) sets an anonymous text based on a poem by Picander in its first four movements and a chorale by Amilie Juliane von Schwarsburg-Rudolstadt from 1686 as its final movement. The cantata is simply scored for soprano soloists, chorus, oboe, strings, and basso continuo. The first movement of "Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke" is in E minor. The second starts in B minor, but ends in D major, which serves as the dominant of the third movement in G major. Similarly, the fourth movement starts in E minor and ends in F sharp major, which serves as the dominant of the concluding chorale that starts in B minor and ends in B major because of the picardy third on the final sonority. Thus, the first movement is in the minor subdominant, the second is structurally dominant to the third that's in the major submediant, and the fourth movement is structurally dominant to the fifth movement. The actual sequence of movements is aria-recitative-aria-recitative-chorale. The first movement is essentially a double concerto for solo oboe and soprano soloists with strings and continuo. The second is a secco recitative for soloist and continuo and the third is an aria in the form of a trio sonata for soloist and continuo. The fourth is a recitative for soloist, strings, and continuo. "Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke" concludes with an austere harmonization of von Schwarsburg-Rudolstadt chorale for chorus and orchestra colla parte.
