Artist Biography

Formed in Manchester, England, in 1964, when three former members of the Whirlwinds - Graham Gouldman (b. 10 May 1945, Manchester, England; guitar/vocals), Steve Jacobsen and Bernard Basso - were joined by ex-Sabres’ drummer Kevin Godley (b. 7 October 1945, Manchester, England). However, although Graham’s songwriting skills provided hits for the Yardbirds, Hollies and Herman’s Hermits, his group was unable to gain a similar commercial ascendancy. Between 1965 and 1966, the Mockingbirds completed five singles, of which ‘You Stole My Love’ was the most ambitious. Although co-produced by Giorgio Gomelsky and Paul Samwell-Smith, and abetted by vocalist Julie Driscoll, the song was a commercial failure and the group’s confidence was consequently undermined. Gouldman began a solo career upon the group’s collapse, but later rejoined Godley for several studio projects, which in turn inspired the formation of 10cc.
