Artist Biography by

Columbus, OH-based progressive rock trio the Load was formed in March 1973 by Dave Hessler and Sterling Smith, who previously teamed in the hard rock combo Osiris. Drummer Tom Smith completed the lineup, with Hessler and Sterling both playing keyboards in the group's original incarnation; in time, however, the former built himself a double-necked guitar and the latter acquired a Minimoog synthesizer, allowing him to switch from bass to synth. The Load regularly gigged around the Midwest and in 1976 issued Praise the Load, their debut LP, on Owl Intermedia. The trio then relocated to Los Angeles, briefly backing Meat Loaf and recording an album in support of Baron Stewart. A second album, Load Have Mercy, was completed but did not see official release until it appeared on CD in 1996; the Load disbanded in 1978, with Sterling remaining in L.A. to work as a session musician, and Hessler and Tom returning to Columbus to form the Danger Brothers.
