The Booty Olympics formed out of the ashes of several highly respected New York City rock acts, rising up as a fun, energetic pop group. It all started with Mitzi Dodge, the chief songwriter for the Booty Olympics. She played with several bands in high school, eventually forming a band with future techno star Moby. She hooked up with STP soon after, joining the all-girl noise act on a tour with Sonic Youth and a pre-mainstream Nirvana. She claims that she quit after passing out drunk in Kurt Cobain's bed, and moved on to play in a few other acts before joining the Friggs. The Friggs had been formed by Palmyra Delran, a sexy and fun guitarist that banged out garage rock with her outfit. But as the band began to dissolve, both musicians expressed an interest to move on. While Dodge and Delran discussed their situation, they decided to switch roles and soon Delran was playing the drums and they were searching for a bassist. Betsy Todd fit the bill when the three ended up meeting in Las Vegas, so the musicians formed the Booty Olympics on the spot. A poppy rock act with occasional journeys into ethereal shoegazing, they stood in contrast to much of the music their previous outfits had offered up. They returned to New York City and began cutting singles and finally recorded their debut, Boystyle, in 2002.
