b. Sidney John Hill, 16 March 1885, Capetown, South Africa, d. 15 April 1965, Nice, France. Half-brother of Charlie Chaplin, Syd was a singer, dancer and comedian and became a popular part of Fred Karno’s troupe in London, England. He helped Charlie become a member of Karno’s troupe and later joined his half-brother at Mack Sennett’s Keystone company. Later, he became Charlie’s business manager. During the 20s, having been instrumental in setting up the base for Charlie’s fortune, he played some film roles including starring in Charley’s Aunt (1925). Towards the end of the decade he returned to England and his subsequent life and career lay outside the scope of this work.
