Sometimes mistaken for a fellow with glasses who taped his own television show on the other end of the west coast, Steve Allen is based in the Pacific Northwest, where he is active in mainstream jazz. In 1990 he produced an album by the Latin jazz group Bochinche, with whom he also performs on keyboards and synthesizer. Producers seem to have an unlimited number of possible tasks, and one of the special responsibilities with Bochinche is keeping track of all the percussion instruments. Bandmember Michael Spiro, who like Allen also creates synthesizer tracks and produces, comes loaded for bear with caixa, claves, pandeiro, repique, surdo, bata, cuica, cowbell, guiro, and cascara.
