A highly commercial swingbeat/urban R&B concern, signed to Uptown Records prior to Andre Harrell’s defection to Motown Records, Soul For Real made their debut with Candy Rain in 1995. Comprising four brothers, Soul IV Real are led by their eldest sibling, Chris ‘Choc’ Dalyrimple (b. 30 April 1971, USA). The other Dalyrimple brothers are Andre (b. 4 April 1974, USA), Brian (b. c.1976, USA) and Jason (b. 10 May 1980, USA). Despite the record label turbulence that accompanied the departure of Harrell, Candy Rain earned platinum status, though the group insisted they could have sold many more copies had the record been given sufficient promotion. However, it unquestionably served to launch Soul IV Real’s career, housing three hit singles in ‘Every Little Thing I Do’, ‘Candy Rain’ and ‘If You Want It’. With the advent of the 1996 follow-up, For Life, it had become obvious that both the group and Uptown were gearing up to ensure the act reached its projected multi-platinum status. In order to achieve this, the group embraced a much more mature sound, replacing the bubblegum pop of its forerunner with a considered, slightly forced R&B feel. The disappointing performance of For Life resulted in the group changing labels and moving to Chrome Dome.
