A popular and versatile band singer in the 40s, Nelson sang with Teddy Powell before taking over from Ray Eberle with the Glenn Miller civilian band in late 1942. Nelson sang on such Miller hits as ‘Dearly Beloved’, ‘Moonlight Becomes You’, ‘Moonlight Mood’ and ‘That Old Black Magic’. In the mid-40s he joined Guy Lombardo’s Orchestra, and featured on their big 1944 hit, ‘It’s Love-Love-Love’.
