Rolo Tomase began their journey toward making an album in the late '90s, when guitarist Brian McBrearty and drummer Liam Hurley teamed with bassist David Perrott for a jam session. All hailing from Brooklyn, NY, the band had a genuine love of jazz but desired to move into the post-rock scene that many of their favorite bands came from. Neither genre really fit what they were doing, as the music was more of a funky avant-garde approach to rock music than anything else. Teaming with the emerging Audio Recordings in early 2002, they became the first band signed to the fledgling label and recorded Plan B that summer. By the fall, the album was released, marking the first national exposure both the artist and the company had.
