b. Roger Emerson Bell, 4 January 1919, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. In his early teenage years Bell played drums before taking up the cornet. With his brother, Graeme Bell, he played locally and for a while led a band of which his brother eventually became leader. Bell travelled to Europe with the band during the late 40s and early 50s and later in that decade returned to band leading in Melbourne. Among musicians who worked under his leadership were Len Barnard and Ade Monsbourgh. Bell remained active in jazz, composing as well as playing, through subsequent decades.
