Formed by Jimmy "Chops" Sparling (drums) in Newcastlewest, County Limerick, Ireland, Rock the Joint have something of an eclectic approach to Celtic music, salting it with a variety of original songs by band members Brendan Guerin (acoustic guitar, vocals) and Ralph Lee (bass, vocals) and covers of such songs as Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." Amongst the selections on their debut release (recorded live in Newcastlewest) are several traditionals, a song by the late Newcastlewest songwriter Sean McCarthy, and several originals. The band is rounded out by Annette O' Sullivan (tin whistles) and Sean Mac Mathuna (accordion). The band's influences include Horslips and Thin Lizzy, rhythm-keeping being handled by veteran rocker Sparling on a full drum kit, with no bodhrans anywhere in sight. Rock the Joint have received several awards in Ireland since their appearance.
