Robert Cooper is a leading Canadian conductor who has been involved with several popular recordings of Christmas music, but would most likely want to boast about more prestigious credits. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, he studied conducting with Deral Johnson, Helmuth Rilling, the German Martin Stephani, and the American Robert Shaw. Cooper's professional affiliations include director of the Opera in Concert Chorus and Chorus Niagara. Beginning with his professional debut leading the Mendelssohn Choir at a National Arts Centre Festival Canada gala, he has been known for taking on an expansive and eclectic repertoire.
He seems to be particularly favored by Canadian opera companies, including the Manitoba Opera, Ottawa's Opera Lyra, and Pacific Opera Victoria. He has been involved in presenting nearly 100 operas at these and other companies. His work with choirs has also resulted in a series of top festival appearances, including the Guelph Spring Festival and the International Choral Festival. The conductor is righteously proud of the premieres of many new Canadian works that have been presented during these types of events. Cooper also works as a clinician and guest conductor and serves as an executive producer of opera and choral music for the CBC radio.
