The free jazz quartet Psychic Warrior included several veterans of the British jazz scene, the most renowned of them being saxophonist Elton Dean. Also in the group were keyboardist Alex Maguire, who had worked with Dean in several other settings, and wrote most of the material on Psychic Warrior's first album; bassist Fred Baker, who'd played with Maguire in Pip Pyle's Bash!; and drummer Liam Genockey, who'd played with Paul Brady, Gerry Rafferty, Robert Wyatt, and others. Their self-titled debut LP, issued in 2004, presented instrumental jazz fusion that varied from the relatively serene (on the tracks featuring Maguire on Fender Rhodes electric piano) to, more commonly, the adventurous and freewheeling, with Maguire's unsettling Hammond organ taking a prominent role.
