Ny Ony (born: Rasolomahatratra Ny Ony Henintsoa Andriamparany) has played an essential role in the evolution of Madagascan music. A founding member of Salomiral, a late-'70s band that he formed with his six brothers, Ony has continued to make his presence felt as a studio musician at the Ravinaha Studio in Tamatove in 1986 and as guitar, bass, and kabosy player for Tarika since 1994.
Ony represents the third generation of musicians in his family. After sharpening his musical skills as lead guitarist for a variety of rock bands, he joined with his brothers to form the tradition-rooted group, Salomiral in 1976. A year later, he relocated to Tamatove, where he focused on the traditional folk music and dance of the Betsimisaraka tribe. Ony has increasingly shifted his attention to vakojazzana, a musical style that combines traditional Madagascan music with jazz and popular music.
