Night Star Musical Club is one of the younger bands in Tanzania. Hailing from the Tanga-Mombassa region, the Club plays mchiriku: a music defined by its raw lyrics and down-and-dirty dance style. Although such music was banned by the government in the 1970s, it is currently enjoying a renaissance. Politically and geographically marginal, groups like the Night Star Musical Club cannot afford expensive instruments and instead rely on cheap synthesizer keyboards and percussion.
