My Place in Space formed in 1998 as the solo project of Darren Cloutier of Princeton Reverbs Colonial. Cloutier's lo-fi creations hint at musical talents that were not always evident in his other projects. Performing guitar, drums, and synthesizers, his My Place in Space persona serves as a refreshing reminder that the independent rock movement continued to thrive. 1999 saw the self-titled My Place in Space cassette on Cloutier's Red Carpet Ring Records. The In Perfect Worlds cassette followed in 2000. Cloutier first performed live as My Place in Space in March 2000 in Massachusetts, sharing a bill with Brittle Stars and Musical Chairs. He also shared stages with Masters of the Hemisphere, Triple Velcro, and Jason Anderson of Wolf Colonel. 2001 saw the release of the Ten Songs From Planet Earth CD, again on Red Carpet Ring. Cloutier left Princeton Reverbs Colonial in 2001, and My Place in Space became his primary musical focus. In 2002, the There Have Been Space Cadets Here Before You EP appeared on Quessadilla Records. Cloutier's project has also appeared on various independent music compilations since the project's inception.
