Toronto's Merkury Burn specializes in a sound that harkens back to such '80s British pop/new wave kings as the Smiths, the Cure, and Depeche Mode. The quartet includes members R. Kelly Clipperton (vocals), Jones (guitars), Cathy Marchese (drums), and Vikas Sharma (bass guitar), and started out in the summer of 1999, when Clipperton (formerly of local band My Dear Heretic) began penning songs with then-hospital worker Jones. Within a year, Merkury Burn's lineup was solidified, issuing their debut, Suburban Porn, in 2000. The band has enjoyed some exposure via their video for the track "Heaven" being featured on MuchMusic's Indie Spotlight.
