A project that defies easy categorization, Maniacs vs. Sharkiat is a collaboration between the Geneva-based Maniacs and the Egyptian group Sharkiat. Their Don't Climb the Pyramids album was released in Switzerland via Baraka El Farnatshi, a company noted for cross-cultural collisions of electronic Western pop and traditional North African music, especially in its releases by Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects. The record matched the rockish guitar, bass and drums of the Maniacs with the Arabic pop of Sharkiat, whose instruments include the tabla, ney, djembe, and timbales. With most of the vocals sung in English by the Maniacs' Alain Croubalian, it's a fairly comfortable mix of Western '90s alternative rock and the Egyptian sounds of Sharkiat, although not as innovative and successful as the first album by Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects.
