One of the important instrumentalists of carioca choro in the belle époque, Licas' contemporaries were Anacleto de Medeiros, Irineu de Almeida, Pedro Augusto, Luís de Sousa, Candinho Trombone, Cupertino, Catulo da Paixão Cearense, Mário Cavaquinho, Sátiro Bilhar, and others, with whom he used to play frequently. Highly regarded as a leading player by his colleagues, he was regularly requested for the memorable choros (also the name of the musical reunions themselves) of the time. His softness and subtlety at imitating the violão (acoustic guitar) baixarias (bass lines) at his difficult instrument were widely cherished. Also a flutist, he was also a member of the renowned Banda do Corpo de Bombeiros (under the conduction of Anacleto de Medeiros, of whom Licas was a close friend).
